The Peter Pan peanut butter recall has been extended to peanut butter manufactured as far back as October 2004. The outbreak of salmonella related to peanut butter has so far sickened 290 people from 39 states. No deaths have been reported.

In a new warning by the FDA, the peanut butter recall has spread to ice cream manufacturers and the makers of other dessert toppings. The salmonella tainted peanut butter originally found in the ConAgra plant was also shipped to a plant in Humboldt Tennessee where bulk peanut butter is sold to such stores as Carvel and Sonic restaurants.

The FDA has expanded its peanut butter recall again in order to include single serving packets of Peter Pan peanut butter. These packets are the 3/4 ounce and 1.1 ounce variety and were sold to institutions. The FDA is trying to determine who was sold these packets.

If you or a loved one have eaten the peanut butter and have experienced diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or fever, you should seek medical attention immediately. Also, don't throw away the jar, it is important evidence for your healthcare professional...

An excellent editorial on the dangers of the Taser stun gun can be found in today's Sarasota Herald Tribune. The piece mentions that the Taser gun is safer than a handgun, its dangers can not be overlooked. The jolt of electricity and wire barbs that hook into the victim can be lethal. The editorial correctly points out that the stun gun should only be used as a last resort by law...

In a sharply worded letter to the makers of ReNu contact lens solution, the FDA has rebuked Bausch & Lomb for failure to report some 35 cases of fungal infection in Singapore. The infections were reported to the Rochester NY based executives and an FDA inspection of the company's Greenville, S.C. plant followed the fungal outbreak last May.

Now that U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler's ruling makes it more difficult for big tobacco companies to market their deadly products in an overtly deceptive fashion, their marketing gurus will have to come up with new ways to keep smokers hooked to their habits. Unless the new court ruling is overturned on appeal, cigarette manufacturers will have to abandon marketing words such as "light"...

Victims of big tobacco will finally get their day in court after a US District Judge ruled yesterday that the cigarette manufacturers have conspired to withhold the deadly effects and addictive qualities of tobacco from the public. The ruling found Philip Morris, RJ Reynolds, Brown & Williamson, British American Tobacco, and Lorillard Tobacco guilty of misleading the public about tobacco's...

Stun gun maker Taser International Inc. has agreed to pay $20 million dollars to settle lawsuits against its products. After initially stating that it would fight the lawsuits to the bitter end, the company now says it's best to settle the cases and move on. The lawsuits have claimed that the company overstated the safety of the stun gun.

A report from researchers at the University of Miami raises more questions about the recent problems associated with Bausch & Lomb's ReNu contact lens solution. The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine reports 34 cases of fungal keratitis associated with soft contact lens use between January 2004 and April 2006. Compare that to the previous numbers from the same institution: only three...

Agricultural and chemical companies are lobbying the EPA to approve license extensions for approximately 20 pesticides that are suspected to retard brain growth in unborn babies and children. The pesticides include Orthene, Trithion, Nemacur and Dursban, are generally sold for use on farms rather than in homes. In spite of its function as a regulatory agency, the EPA has been criticized for...

Dr. Deepinder Dhaliwal, Director of Refractive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has tested the ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution and found the fusarium keratitis fungus growing within it. The results were turned over to the CDC. This is a significant discovery since, in all likelihood, Bausch & Lomb officials will blame contact lens solution users for the...

ReNu has come under intense scrutiny as well as several lawsuits for its link to a severe fungal infection called fusarium keratitis.
