In spite of what the Catholic Church's public relations operation says, an independent study has said that priest abuse claims in the United States actually rose 16% over the same period last year. This in spite of the fact that 2 dioceses, Lincoln Nebraska and Baker Oregon refused to participate in the study. Interestingly, the study notes that 40% of the new claims cited abuse from clergy not previously reported as abusers.
This is especially important in light of efforts in NY where state legislators are considering the Child Victims Act. Many sex abuse advocates and NY victims are hopeful that the new legislation will pass with a Democratically controlled Legislature and a Governor who has publicly stated his support for the measure. The bill, if signed into law, would give sexual abuse survivors a one year window to seek justice in a courtroom. With 40% of new clergy being accused, such legislation would provide needed transparency and justice for those who suffered this terrible ordeal.

I am still at a complete loss as to why the lay Catholics don't get to the bottom of these horrendous crimes. The priests of the Roman Catholic Church have[ since the church' s inception] are now & still are willfully committing these CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY! It will never stop unless the laity gets with it, NOW TO STOP IT!And THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT [ for 8 YEARS], AND DONE NOTHING TO HELP THE SURVIVORS..IF IT WERE NOT A RCC SCANDAL, THEY WOULD BE UP IN ARMS.JESUS DOES NOT CONDONE ANY OF THESE CRIMES! MANY PRIESTS are hiding behind the Vatican Walls, many just transfered by their superiors to another parish, state or country, to keep the abuse going and keep the RCC free from Scandal. It's not Scandal free and never will be, because WE KNOW, NOW! THE PRIESTS & THE HIERARCHY WILL NEVER DO ANYTHING TO HELP! They play the game they have always played! Lying, decietful words of "WE HAVE IT UNDER CONTROL" [SO THEY THINK, we think ]when they mean nothing of the kind & could care less whether they sexually abuse children for their own pleasure or they steal money from the parishioners for their own pleasures. They want to keep "the way of life" they are used to and don't want ANYBODY.........[laity, lawyers for the abused, police, journalists, legislaturs, govenors, attorneys general, commentators, bloggers, or whom ever may have a A BIGGER VOICE TO BE HEARD, ABOVE THEIR VOICES IN THE PEWS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BLOGGERS.The RCC lawyers,[of course, more expensive than the abused lawyers] fight tooth and nail to keep the THE SURVIVORS OF sexual abuse, confused and humiliated, by their rhetoric. Another PERPETUAL CRIME is DELIBERTLY caused, as were the original crimes. They hire William Donohue[Catholic League] to defend their[priests & institutions ]! he does not help the suvivors. All PRE-MEDITATED CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, CAUSED BY THE HOLY ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIESTHOOD! Don't you just love it?
As with every religion the Catholic church holds its priests to a higher standard than "normal" men. Too bad they're really just normal men under the clothing, and these abuses happen. They should either allow them to marry or castrate them so these type of abuses cannot happen. If they REALLY want to be priests--well then they'd have to prove it that way! (Could always freeze some semen in case they change their mind, leave the priesthood and want a family some day).As far as punishment for those that do abuse minors....hey....if its okay for the church to spout off about politics in the press, etc...then the laws every other human being must face here on earth should also apply to them. If they're abusing children the white collar should in NO WAY save them from going to prison!! The hypocrisy of the Church is appalling in dealing with these criminals!!(and YES I'm Catholic!)
